This project is rooted in one of the qualities of Zen, Sabi, which values the passage of time and the luster of life in objects, in things, and in people. Instead of resisting the natural progression and seeing those nuances as deterioration or decay, Zen highlights their value as an expression of impermanence. The pieces in this project, after being bisque-fired, were semi-buried beneath a Rhus tree, while its leaves still burned with a deep autumn red. That ground was also inhabited by moss. The falling leaves and rain imbued each piece with an induced passage of time, allowing nature to penetrate their interiors, infusing them with brownish tones and random impressions, leaving behind the mark of an autumn.
