Sumie

PAINTING

Sumi (ink) - e (painting) gives its name to the art of black ink painting on rice paper. Its origin is Chinese, and it was Zen monks who brought it to Japan, where it developed its own unique style, aesthetics, and meaning. It is characterized by the spontaneity of the brushstroke—a gesture without retouching that requires years of practice. A lifetime of practice. In the studio, everything created in a session is discarded. This is not merely an exercise in detachment; it is the understanding that the artwork is not on the paper but within oneself. Since my early twenties, this discipline has been my guiding force. I have gone through periods of deep immersion and chosen abstinence. At this stage, I engage with it from a new perspective, enriched by the years lived, by other arts, and by Zen practices. My training is in sumi-e, but my aspiration is the spirit of zenga (Zen painting): that state in which technique and conventions have been fully absorbed and transcended, allowing expression to flow with beauty, naturalness, subtlety, humor, poetry, and depth—expressing what lies beyond words. This gallery contains some images of my process.
